When I was a young girl and my parents were going through their divorce, my mom would often sit at the piano and sing the song “Be Not Afraid.” At the age of seven, I was very confused as to why she found comfort in the lyrics.

“You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way.
You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand.
You shall see the face of God and live.”

What really confused me was when it came to the chorus, it said, “Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come follow me, and I will give you rest.”

To my young, hurting heart, the whole song just didn’t make sense. I couldn’t wrap my head around how going through difficulties or trials lead to rest if God was with me. All I knew of rest was going to sleep.

But in that season of my life where nothing really made sense, that’s where I found God. I found Him in the sounds of my mom’s voice as she sang through her worst fears. I found Him in the unanswered prayers of my child-heart for my parents to get back together. I found Him in the small faith I had that He would never leave me. I found Him as my Saviour.

For so many in our world, rest doesn’t make sense in the midst of the chaos and turmoil of life. Rest cannot be found when the economy is bad, relationships fall apart and your body aches.

But we, as followers of Christ have the rest the world longs for. We know Who they need. We know that through it all, following Him will lead to rest.

How are you finding rest in the Lord today?
